On October 14, 1940, a young man, 21 years of age and by occupation a machinest [sic], eyes blue, hair brown, six feet one-half inches in height, enlisted in the Army National Guard.
His name was Carl Stenberg and he would be a part of the 32nd “Red Arrow” division in WWII, eventually making his way across the Owen Stanley mountains to the Battle of Buna in Papua New Guinea.
This website is, in part, his story. It is also the story of the woman who would become his wife, Frances Hladin, as she is the one who documented much of what he went through. And, as they are my grandparents, it is in some ways my story too. Learn more about this website.
